Austrian Orders and Decorations - Part I.

Ortner, Dr. M. Christian, and Ludwigstorff, Dr. Georg:

Austrian Orders and Decorations - Part I: The Imperial-Royal Orders up to 1918.

Vienna 2017.

In English or in German language, size 29.5 × 26 cm, 832 pages in two volumes, with more than 2,500 colour and black-and-white photographs, cloth-bound hardcover with dust jacket, in card slipcase, weight 5 kg.

The orders and decorations of Old Austria are a fascinating field of study and research to this day, not only reflecting the continuity and turning points of the Habsburg Monarchy from the middle of the 18th century to the end of 1918, but also constituting a direct link with the medieval secular and chivalric orders and their extremely ideological and spiritual character, particularly through the Order of the Golden Fleece. The orders founded in the 18th and 19th centuries later also took into account a recipient’s achievements but they still largely retained the nature of fellowships, loyal to their sovereign and ruler. Although these ‘orders’ were originally intended only for certain social and professional groups, throughout the 19th century the system of awards was increasingly expanded, with decorations commemorating various historical events or personages and later honouring general merit, military achievement or long service.

This resulted in a system that was not only comprehensive but complex and had its own peculiar characteristics, distinct from those of other nations.

There were for example privileges and monetary gratuities as well as ennoblement attached to some awards, a recipient’s social background was taken into account and there was a strict hierarchy amongst the orders and decorations themselves.

This two-volume work, apart from dealing with the cultural and historical background, focuses in detail on the decorations themselves. They are shown here, in previously unpublished abundance, in a monograph of 832 pages with more than 2,500 photographs and illustrations. This part I of the planned series deals with the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Military Order of Maria Theresa, the Order of St. Stephen, the Order of Leopold, the Order of the Iron Crown, the Order of the Starry Cross, the Order of Elisabeth and the Order of the Slaves of Virtue.

Dear collector and client!

I am very pelased to welcome you on my homepage. We are workin now in cooperation with Europe's most important numismatic auction house

for which I'm already working since several years as a representative, expert for orders and decorations and author of auction catalogues.

We have the high intension to follow also in phaleristics the high standards that this important auction house in Osnabrueck has placed in numismatics since many years. Therefore we also give full warranty without any temporary restriction (i. e. according to the juridical definition for the time of existance of this firm) for the authenticity auf the pieces offered here and sold by us (despite state otherwise in the respective description).

My total extensive stock can be seen on the pages New on Stock and Complete Stock of the folder Sale, sub-folder Orders & Medals. We are proud that we can offer you a great number of

o r d e r s  o f  c h i v a l r y , d e c o r a t i o n  and  m e d a l s ,

m o u n t e d  m e d a l  g r o u p s  and  m i n i a t u r e  m e d a l s ,

c o i n s  and  t a b l e - m e d a l s

as well as  d i p l o m a s  and  d o c u m e n t s ,

G e r m a n y  and it's numerous  f e d e r a l  s t a t e s  and  c o u n t r i e s ,

the  c o u n t r i e s  o f  E u r o p e ,

and from many  c o u n t r i e s  f r o m  a l l  o v e r  t h e  w o r l d ,

from  p a s t  and  p r e s e n t  t i m e .

Also a great number of German and foreign

p h a l e r i s t i c  r e f e r e n c e  b o o k s

n e  w  as well as of  s e c o n d  h a n d  can be found on the pages New on Stock and Complete Stock of the sub-folder Reference Books. Journals and auction catalogues are offered on the page Journals etc. .

I tried to do my very best in describing the offered items as precisely as possible. I would like to point out, that also copies (or "de-valued" fakes), bearing the mark "COPY", are offered here. We are offering these objects for serveral reasons:

1. I just would like to inform the public, that such a copy is existing.

2. I also would like to demonstrate, that such fakes by marking them with "COPY" can be offered without great danger for collectors.

3. Such pieces enable also a collector with a so called  "smaller wallet", who does not have enough money to buy an expensive original piece, to buy such a reference-piece for his collection, at a low price.

4. And I would like to demonstate that even such fakes may serve, correctly marked, for something good.

(In this connection it is quite interesting to notice, that such pieces marked "COPY" are extremely hard to sell and may stay for a long time on stock, but that identical pieces - offered by others -, correctly described as "reproduction", "collectores manufacturing", "copy", etc., but not marked with "COPY", are sold quite fast and at good prices. That makes me thinking about and asking, why . . . Hony soit, qui mal y pense!)

For a better viwing of the offered items and titles just click on the respective small picture on the page, and it will be enlarged. With a click on the grey background the size will be recuced again.

The page Numismatica are showing coins, table-medalspaper money and  historical shares. On the page Historica & Militaria historicadocuments and autographs, militaria and historical arms can be found, and on the page Other Items finally offers some othe antique items.

Competent experience of more than 25 years working in the order's and medal's business as well as my own huge reference library (containing more than 6,000 reference titles) help me to identify and to describe and valuate the pieces offered here. Beyond this I also receive a lot of information through my various memberships
