Ex Künker auction 329 on October 11, 2019, vat.-no. 7457. - Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia (1892-1980) was the only daughter of Emperor and King Wilhelm II (1859-1941, reigned from 1888 until 1918), the Kaiser, and his spouse Auguste Viktoria, née Princess of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1858-1921). On May 24, 1913, Viktoria Luise married Prince Ernst August (III) of Hanover (1887-1953), son of the last crown prince of Hanover, Ernst August, Duke of Cumberland (1845-1923), and his spouse Tyra, née Princess of Denmark (1853-1933). By this marriage, Viktoria Luise became a princess of Hanover and a princess of Great Britain and Ireland. After the Hanovrian-Prussian compensation - to which the marriage had effectively contributed - her husband on November 1, 1913, became reigning Duke uf the Duchy of Brunswick and Lüneburg, and his spouse Duchess. She was very popular until her death on December 11, 1980. Viktoria Luis was 2nd Chef of the 2nd Leib-Husaren-Regiments "Königin Viktoria von Preußen" No. 2.; von Mackensen from 1893 until 1898 had been commanding officer of the 1st Leib-Husaren-Regiments Nr. , with which he identified himself life-long, and whose uniform he was allowed until his death, what he regularly did. This may be one of the backgrounds for this present from Viktoria Luise in occasion of the 80th birthday of Generalfeldmarschall August von Mackensen on December 6, 1929. - Provenance: After decease of Generalfeldmarschall August von Mackensen (1849-1945) in 1945 these fruit knives were inherited to his eldest son Hans Georg von Mackensen (1883-1947). The latters widdow Wienifred, née von Neurath (1904-1985) inherited them to her nephew Klaus von Mackensen, father of the recent owners. |
